Token reliability is key to a successful service

When you buy a service, reliability is one of the most important considerations. We aim to make the Signify service at least or more reliable than any system you could build yourself.   Key to enabling us to provide this level of reliability is the quality and durability of the tokens we deploy as part of our service.

When putting an authentication token into the hands of an end user, you need to have confidence that the device will perform regardless of the rigors of the end user environment.  A failed token not only results in user productivity loss and frustration, but it also increases help desk costs  and burdens you to stock and distribute excessive amounts of spare tokens.

Highly reliable authentication tokens

Our managed token authentication service - RSA SecurID from Signify uses RSA SecurID  authentication tokens which provide industry-leading levels of reliability and are designed to withstand the worst imaginable conditions.

RSA SecurID tokens are based on RSA’s patented time-synchronous technology, and built upon the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm, a recognised standard that is continuously scrutinised and challenged by cryptologists around the world to ensure its strength and dependability.

The RSA algorithm is the most widely used method of implementing public key cryptography and has been deployed in more than one billion applications worldwide.  There are over 25,000 RSA SecurID customers worldwide.

Investing in token reliability

RSA SecurID tokens are designed to provide the highest levels of quality and reliability in the industry.  Token quality is extremely important to RSA – every RSA SecurID token is sealed to protect it from the elements and to prevent tampering.

RSA invests heavily in testing and have a fulyl- featured test laboratory to ensure their tokens always meet maximum product reliability and demanding customer requirements.  RSA, with its research arm RSA Laboratories, is recognised as a leading firm in the field of cryptography.  The goal of the laboratories is to simulate real-world conditions to make sure that each lot of tokens will survive in the field without incident throughout – and even beyond – its predicted useful life.

Tests that are regularly conducted include:

Temperature cycling:Includes a -20°C to 70°C for 25 cycles with each cycle taking 2 hours and 1.5 hours for ramp time.

High humidity:Includes 95% humidity with 35°C for 96 hours, followed by a gradual decrease to 23°C and 50% humidity.

Random vibration:Includes an acceleration of 15 Grms with a frequency of 10-2000 Hz with duration of one hour per each of three axis (X, Y, &Z).

Mechanical shock:Includes a shock of 3500 g’s with a pulse time of 0.5ms on all 3 axis of the unit.

ESD: The minimum engineering requirement is 15Kv (pos and neg). Tumble testing: Tumbling takes place in a hexagonal tumbling drum. Tumble at 20 RPMs for 60 minutes.

Run-over check:An car will drive over the fobs with a single rear tyre.

Immersion check:This will check the ability of the RSA SecurID tokens to withstand immersion in water.

RSA Security funds and conducts this extensive testing for one reason; to ensure customers selecting SecurID solutions can confidently deploy highly reliable tokens that provide the most reliable and positive experience foe the end user.  RSA stand behind their reputation for quality with a warrantee on every token for its lifespan.

To read more about the tests RSA conducts, read the white paper ‘Ensuring Token Reliability Across the Enterprise’.

In additional to performing tests on the SecurID tokens themselves, RSA also employ independent testing firms to perform comparison tests between SecurID and other leading authentication tokens.
